Proctitis is an inflammation of the lining of the rectum called the rectal mucosa.

What are the main causes of proctitis?

Inflammatory bowel diseases: Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis

Infectious:

  • Sexually transmitted diseases eg. gonorrhea; syphilis, chlamydia, herpes.
  • Other infections eg. campylobacter, shigella, salmonella.

Use of antibiotics (broad-spectrum antibiotics) that destroy normal intestinal bacteria and allow other bacteria to grow in their place.

What are the symptoms of proctitis?

The most common complaints of proctitis are: intense anorectal pain, rectal bleeding, urge to have bowel movement and passage of mucus. If you experience any of these symptoms, we strongly suggest you to consult your health care professional.
